Check Out Our Self-Portraits and Our Starry Nights! Our after-school Shark Art Clubs have completed their first four-week sessions, and much of the artwork is making a vibrant splash along the walls of our main hallway! Under the leadership of local artist Debbie Dougherty, students emulated Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night painting using oil pastels and their own creativity. Another project involved using some of Picasso's techniques as they created self portraits with watercolors. Please click here for a slideshow with over a dozen samples of their lovely artwork. The IB Attitude, "Creativity," is alive and well in this exhibit!

Frederica Academy
MISSION STATEMENT To maximize each student's potential and prepare him/her for college and adult life through the development of mind, body, and spirit. PHILOSOPHY Frederica Academy is a coeducational, nondenominational, independent, college preparatory day school offering the highest quality education for students of all races, creeds, and nationalities. The mission of Frederica Academy is to prepare students who are of average or above average ability and who aspire to a higher education to realize their potential and to respond to the expectations of a democratic society. Each student is viewed as unique so that special qualities may be recognized and developed. The school fosters an atmosphere where high moral standards of conduct within the Judeo-Christian tradition are practiced, and there is a stated honor code. Support from parents and the community is actively sought in maintaining these high moral and academic standards throughout the learning process and in the learning environment. Education, as distinguished from training, is a process of blossoming from within rather than one of manipulation from without. It occurs when inherent abilities are stimulated by an environment conducive to growth. Growth implies change: a stretching, a transcending of boundaries. Education is dynamic and the school becomes the change agent. Close relationships are a significant characteristic of life at Frederica Academy. We form a community based on mutual trust and participation by all students, faculty and administration. Because of this spirit, the government of daily life at this school is made as simple as possible. Students are given the freedom to practice expected self-control and to accept personal responsibility for their actions. The basic rules regulating our common life are intended to ensure consistency, fairness and a sound environment for education. Regular attendance at school and in classes is greatly valued, for absence from school removes students from both the learning process and important community building opportunities. Frederica Academy aspires to provide those resources of faculty, curriculum, and environment which best enhance student opportunity for intellectual, physical, moral, social, and aesthetic development. Frederica Academy prepares its students to be self-reliant, active learners and responsible citizens who pursue excellence in all endeavors.

Golden Isles Career Academy
Dr. Marty Simmons, president of the Fourteen Black Men of Glynn, Inc., presented Senetra Haywood, principal of Golden Isles Career Academy, a check to support the upcoming college fair scholarship program. The Fourteen Black Men of Glynn, Inc., is the major sponsor of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) College Fair that will be held on Friday, November 1, 2013 at Golden Isles Career Academy from 9 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The event, in its second year, is coordinated by Glynn County high school counselors for juniors and seniors from both high schools. The purpose of the fair is to provide opportunity and access for students in Southeast Georgia who do not have access to attend college fairs available to students in the larger cities. This year, selected 8th graders from the local middle schools have also been invited to participate as the counseling departments strive to make students college and career aware and ready. HBCUs offer culture, a rich history, and rigorous academic programs. Once the only vehicles for African Americans to receive higher education, today HBCUs have a significant percentage of non-African American student populations that include Asian, Hispanic, International and white American students. HBCU graduates are well-rounded, have entrepreneurial spirits, and have acquired a deeper appreciation for excellence and a greater passion for community service. Everyone gathered in the cafeteria for the big announcement. Several of her friends and family watched by Iphone and her husband surprised her with a bouquet of flowers. After the announcement, Ambrose said, "All I can say is I am honored! Truly, truly honored. I can't believe I get to work around people I love everyday and do something that feels more like a hobby than a job!" Ambrose has been a teacher at GIES for six years and has taught school for 14 years.
